Wildwood Zoo Announces the Passing of Malakai the Timber Wolf

It is with heavy hearts that Wildwood Zoo announces the passing of Malakai, our 15-year-old timber wolf, following a sudden age-related decline.

Born on April 1, 2011, Malakai arrived at Wildwood Zoo in 2015 from Wild World of Animals in Pennsylvania alongside his siblings, Smokey and Luna. Together, the trio quickly became a favorite among zoo guests and remained iconic residents of Wildwood for many years.

At 15 years old, Malakai far exceeded the average life expectancy for a timber wolf in human care. As he entered his senior years and following the passing of his siblings in 2023 from separate forms of cancer, the decision was made to house him alone for his safety and comfort.

The transition suited him well. His appetite, activity level, and steadfast personality never faded. Even in his later years, Malakai eagerly consumed nearly six pounds of red meat each day and remained an active presence in his habitat.

When Malakai lived with Smokey and Luna, there was little doubt he was the dominant wolf. His tough love, watchful gaze, and commanding presence made him a fixture at Wildwood Zoo for nearly a decade. Guests often found him near the front of his exhibit, where he seemed to enjoy observing visitors, watching dogs walk by, and keeping a close eye on everything happening around him.

His curiosity and constant awareness made him one of the zoo’s most recognizable animals. Earlier this week, animal care staff noticed a sudden and significant change in Malakai’s mobility as he rapidly began losing the use of his hind legs.

For a wolf that had remained physically active throughout his life, the change was immediate and concerning. Zoo staff consulted with our veterinary team, but as his condition quickly worsened and he collapsed that afternoon, it became clear that the kindest decision was to prevent further suffering.

Surrounded by the people who cared for him throughout his life, Malakai was peacefully euthanized under anesthesia. While losing an animal is never easy, we take comfort in knowing Malakai lived an exceptionally long life filled with outstanding care, enrichment, and the admiration of countless guests.

His legacy will live on through the memories of those who had the privilege of caring for him and the thousands of visitors who stopped to watch his steady pace, admire his strength, and appreciate the quiet dignity he carried throughout his life.

We find comfort in imagining Malakai reunited with his siblings, Smokey and Luna, once again. Wildwood Zoo thanks our staff, volunteers, and community for their compassion and support as we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable ambassador for his species.
