Wood County citizens have been contacted by a scammer claiming to be a Sgt. Davenport with the Wood County Sheriff’s Department.
The scammer tells victims they have missed jury duty, have an outstanding warrant, and must make an immediate payment to avoid arrest. First, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department does not have an employee by the name of Sgt. Davenport.
And second, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department will never call individuals and request money over the phone or threaten immediate arrest. If you receive a call like this, DO NOT provide any personal or financial information and DO NOT send money.
Lastly, please remember that it’s always okay to call the Wood County Sheriff’s Department at 715-421-8701 if you are confused or concerned that you are being scammed. A simple phone call could save you lost money, time, and hassle.
