Marshfield Clinic, a long-time collaborator with the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s health care and wellness programs, has been presented with the UW Regents Business Partnership Award.

Leadership from Marshfield Clinic, UW-Stevens Point and the Universities of Wisconsin attended a ceremony at the Laird Center for Medical Research at Marshfield Clinic. “This award illustrates how critical our business partners are to the success of the Universities of Wisconsin,” said Regent Jack Salzwedel.

“Marshfield Clinic, a landmark central Wisconsin health organization, has a relationship with UW-Stevens Point that goes back decades. It has been crucial to the ongoing economic, and literal health, of central and northcentral Wisconsin.”

The partnership between the university and Marshfield Clinic supports clinical education and internship opportunities within UW-Stevens Point’s School of Health and Wellness, as well as scholarships, medical care for athletes and professional development.

“One of the greatest challenges we face is the need for more skilled healthcare professionals, and that’s why partnerships like this are so important,” said Dr. Brian Hoerneman, president and CEO of Marshfield Clinic. “Together, we are building a workforce pipeline that can improve the health and well-being of Wisconsin communities.”

“Our relationship demonstrates a shared commitment to excellence,” said UW-Stevens Point’s Interim Chancellor Pratima Gandhi. “Partnering with Marshfield Clinic has a vital role in building healthier communities and expanding access to care in rural areas through education and health career pathways.”

The collaboration includes:

  • The Healthcare Development Fund, allowing expansion of existing degree programs and the establishment of new healthcare majors including the Doctor of Physical Therapy, medical laboratory science program, online health science and wellness clinician degree and nursing partnership with local technical colleges. An occupational therapy program is in development.
  • Marshfield Clinic hosts 70-80 UW-Stevens Point students per year in clinical education and internship opportunities
  • Approximately $62,000/year in scholarships are funded to help support students pursuing majors and future professions in healthcare
  • The Health Scholars Program provides clinical shadowing, research, community service and professional development opportunities for 16-20 students each year.
  • 30 students per year received training and volunteer experience with the Marshfield Clinic Community Connections Team helping to connect patients with local community resources, specifically helping those in rural communities.
  • Marshfield Clinic athletic training staff members provide dedicated support to UWSP athletes for practices, training and athletic events, as well as on campus office hours.
  • An indoor hydroponic garden housed at UWSP at Marshfield supplies greens and vegetables for patients at Marshfield Clinic and the community, in a collaboration with Fork Farms.

The UW Regents Business Partnership Award recognizes the reciprocal relationship between a university and a business. These alliances create innovative collaboration and impact on curricular, program or service efforts that reflect the changing nature of education and the needs of our workforce and communities.
