(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A well-being check in the Portage County Town of New Hope has led to multiple investigations and the death of two individuals.
According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, officers were called to a home in the township Sunday evening, where they found one body outside the residence. Officers then encountered an armed 35-year-old man exiting the house.
He was shot and injured by an officer, treated at the scene, and hospitalized. Officers then found a second body inside the home. They believe both victims died from gunshot wounds. Two children were also found in the home.
They were not harmed and have been turned over to family members. Names of those involved have not been released. The Portage County Deputy who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for such incidents.
Because a Portage County Deputy fired their weapon, the department will not handle further investigation into the incident. Marathon County has been called in to investigate the two deceased individuals, while Wood County will investigate the officer who fired their weapon.
The results of that investigation will then be turned over to Portage County District Attorney Cass Cousins for review. No further information has been released. Officers emphasize that this is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.
