One of the men involved in a fatal vehicle vs. motorcycle crash was sentenced in Wood County Court on Tuesday.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, at the end of August 2024, the Wood County Dispatch Center received a call of a crash involving a vehicle versus motorcycle on South Biron Drive, near Strawberry Lane in the Township of Biron.
Units from the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department, Wood County Sheriff’s Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wood County Rescue and EMS responded to the scene. Life saving measures were attempted with the operator of the motorcycle.
These attempts were unsuccessful and the operator, identified as 28-year-old Miles Duerr of Wisconsin Rapids, was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial on scene investigation indicates the vehicle, driven by Rait Abdiu of Wisconsin Rapids, and his passenger, Trevor Paulson of Stevens Point, was traveling northbound on South Biron Drive, crossed the centerline, and struck the southbound motorcycle.
Back in February, Abdiu pleaded guilty to one count of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and bail jumping. Two other charges were dismissed and read in. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision.
He must also pay restitution totaling $9,332.79. At the end of January, Trevor Paulson was found guilty of, due to a no contest plea, two counts of bail jumping and one count of failure to report a crime. He was sentenced to three years of probation with a condition of 30 days jail time.
