Robert E. Garrett

Feb 3, 2025 | 11:20 AM

Robert E. Garrett embarked on his final adventure on January 24, 2025. Born on December 20, 1969, in Zion, Illinois, Robert was a man who lived his life with the kind of enthusiasm that could only be matched by his beloved canine sidekicks, Bode and Rascal. His journey came to an unexpected end in Marshfield, Wisconsin, but the tales of his escapades will continue to echo through the laughter and memories of those he loved.

Robert’s early years were spent in the halls of Marshfield Senior High School, where he discovered his love of carpentry. Friends and family often joked that Robert could fix just about anything, always willing to help those in need.

In 2006, Robert’s life took a surprising turn when he met Jackie Kafka. They were a match made in heaven, with Robert’s adventurous spirit perfectly complementing Jackie’s own zest for life. Two peas in a pod, and they sealed the deal on June 16, 2023, in a simple ceremony in Abbotsford.

Robert was the master of his craft, was self-employed in construction and drywalling for many years. He built a legacy with the same care and passion that he put into every aspect of his life. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he took great pride in his work. Currently, Robert was employed at Ellis Construction in Stevens Point.

Robert was a true adventurer at heart. He could often be found paddling through the serene waters of the BWCA or local lakes and rivers in his canoe or quietly tracking game with a bow or rifle in hand. His love for nature wasn’t just a hobby; it was a way of life. He enjoyed being on the lake fishing and even in the cold weather of Wisconsin, he could be found there ice fishing. He found peace in the solitude of backpacking out west or traversing the paths of the Ice Age and North Country Trail in Wisconsin, always marveling at the wonders of nature. Some of his favorite places to be were the Grand Tetons, Yosemite, and Glacier National Park along with many others with Jackie always at his side. He also had a great love of music and was always ready to take in a concert at Tinley Park or one of his other favorite venues. You could usually find him with his earbuds in or a speaker nearby listening to his favorite tunes. We can’t forget to mention his fondness for tie dye t-shirts, the brighter the better. He knew what he liked and made no apologies for it.

Robert’s spirit was as vast as the backcountry he explored. He was kind,, adventurous, and handy—the kind of guy who could start a fire in the rain and keep it burning with stories that could make a stoic statue chuckle. His presence was comforting, his laughter a balm, and his absence will be felt deeply by those who knew him.

He leaves behind a loving family who are as unique and spirited as he was to include his wife, Jackie Kafka of Chili; his son, Robert Justin Garrett of Racine; his mother, Beverly Ludford of Marshfield; his stepfather, Galen Hanne of Marshfield and his siblings, Mark Garrett, Shawn Nicewarner and Stephanie Nicewarner. He was preceded in death by his father, George Garrett.

In keeping with Robert’s wishes, he requested that no formal services be held.

So, let’s not dwell on the fact that Robert was taken from us way too soon but rather in the words that Robert lived by, “Don’t cry because you lost him, but rather smile because you knew him.” Here’s to you, Robert—the world is a little less bright since you left us.
