City of Marshfield Placing Seasonal Weight Restriction Signs on Designated Streets Starting Today (March 9th)

By Riley Hebert Mar 9, 2026 | 10:01 AM

The City of Marshfield Street Division will begin placing seasonal weight restriction signs on designated city streets beginning Monday, March 9, 2026.

All signs are expected to be fully posted that day. Seasonal weight restrictions are implemented each spring to protect city streets during the thawing period, when road bases become saturated and more vulnerable to damage from heavy vehicles. The streets posted for seasonal weight restrictions are expected to be consistent with previous years.

The seasonal weight restrictions are as follows:

  • Six (6) ton gross vehicle weight for single axle vehicles
  • Ten (10) ton gross vehicle weight for tandem axle vehicles
  • 24-ton gross vehicle weight maximum

These restrictions will remain in effect until conditions improve and the signs are removed, typically in late April or early May, depending on weather and road conditions. Truck operators are encouraged to consult the City of Marshfield Truck Route Map available on the City website for approved routes through the community.

Surrounding jurisdictions, including Wood County and Marathon County, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation have also begun implementing seasonal weight restrictions on their roadways, effective March 9, 2026, subject to roadway conditions and posting schedules.

Seasonal weight limits help extend the life of local roads and reduce costly repairs caused by heavy vehicles traveling on weakened pavement during the spring thaw cycle.
