This Saturday is the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
I had the opportunity to speak with Sarah Hawk, with the Marshfield Post Office, and she discussed how and what you can donate in more detail and the fact that all donated food will stay local.
Audio PlayerAgain, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is this Saturday, May 10th, and you can donate by leaving non-perishable food items in your mailbox.
(AI assisted transcription of the interview by Otter.ai):
Sarah: “The National Association of Letter Carriers has been doing this national food drive for years now. It is a very easy thing for customers to help support our local community of Soup and Socks and St. Vincent de Paul, because all donations do stay local.”
“This Saturday, if they can place a non perishable food item by their mailbox, we then take it and sort it and it gets divided between both food pantries. It’s very easy, our city carriers and rural carriers, along with the volunteers and family and friends that help do this with us every year, it’s really just a fun day for us, you know, to give back to Marshfield and you know, with kids, especially getting out of school. Now, you know this is going to be a big help to Soup and Socks and St Vincent.”
Riley: “What kind of items can people donate?”
Sarah: “Any non perishable food items and also personal hygiene items as well. If anything is expired that will be thrown away. We can obviously not take any alcoholic products, homemade products, cigarettes, you know, stuff like that. But any non perishable food item or even personal hygiene, is great. It’s a big help.”
Riley: “If people want to donate, but perhaps they’re not going to be around, is there another way for them to donate to the food drive?”
Sarah: “Well, Soup or Socks, and St. Vincent always does take donations. But even a week prior to our food drive this Saturday, and even a week after, we still get random food. So, you know, random items. So again, if they still want to put it by their mailbox and they’re not able to this Saturday, of course, we will ensure that it gets to the right place.”
Riley: “Anything else you’d like to add?”
Sarah: “We appreciate our wonderful community of Marshfield, helping us like they always have, and helping us to stamp out hunger.”
