Marshfield Area Pet Shelter Says Kitten Season Has Begun

The Marshfield Area Pet Shelter says that kitten season has officially begun.

Their first mom gave birth to six kittens on March 17. Now they have five moms and 24 kittens and it’s only the beginning of April. Please consider making a lifesaving donation to support their care. Kitten season, also known as feline breeding season, takes place during the warmer months typically March through October, but can vary depending on location.

During this time, kittens, specifically ones under 8 weeks of age, pop up in shelters all over the country. It happens because female cats that are not spayed, go into heat (become fertile) and give birth during this time, leading to a significant increase in kitten populations.

Due to this, animal shelters and rescue organizations experience a surge in kitten intakes, which can strain their resources and capacity to care for the large number of kittens. Kittens are particularly vulnerable during this time due to their fragile immune systems and the need for specialized care, especially for orphaned or abandoned kittens.

You can help during kitten season by spaying or neutering your pets, fostering kittens, volunteering at shelters, or donating to animal rescue organizations.
