Ronald E. Fregien, age 86, of the Town of Rome, passed away August 16, 2024 at his residence.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 25 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in the Town of Saratoga. Pastor Paul Tullberg will officiate. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post 9 of Wisconsin Rapids.
Ron was born December 3, 1937 in Racine, WI to Edward and Ella (Klaus) Fregien. He graduated from West Allis Central High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force. Two years after he enlisted, he married his high school sweetheart, Fern Gilbert. Ron became an In-Flight Refueling Specialist (“Boomer”), loved his job, attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, and retired in 1979 after 24 years of service. Following his retirement, he held several “careers” such as insurance sales, school bus driver, over-the-road trucker, and public works director.
In his “final” retirement, he was a very active volunteer, serving his church in various council officer positions, properties chairman, stewardship chairman, and chief lawn mower. He also traveled around the United States with his wife, Fern, helping construct churches and schools with Builders for Christ. He was also active in the community, acting as President of the Friends of the Library and Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission for several years, as well as serving on the Rome Fire Department.
As a member of the American Legion, he served in many capacities such as Post Commander, District 8 Commander, County Commander, Chaplain, and Finance Officer.
Fishing and deer hunting brought Ron many pleasurable hours, especially memorable times spent at the cabin in Rusk County with the comaraderie of family and friends. He also loved dancing and cutting firewood.
Ron is survived by his wife of 67 years, Fern, and children: Linda Wallace, Palmyra, WI, Michael (Elizabeth) Fregien, Nekoosa, WI, and Michelle (Richard) Schoof, Waterford, WI; seven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Judith Willms and Joan (Jim) Burton; brother-in-law Dwight (Jane) Gilbert; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by many beloved family members and cherished friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or Lutheran Military Support Group.
Herman-Taylor Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
